How the Program Works
The organizations give financial support to small and medium-sized employers to hire first-year apprentices:
$5,000 for each eligible new first-year apprentice hired
$10,000 if the apprentice hired is from an equity-deserving group. Two apprentices per year, per company if you have more than one company. They also provide other support to employers to help them take part in apprenticeship. There may be additional ongoing funding for those apprentices who qualify.
1. Register the apprentice
2. Sign a training agreement
You and the apprentice candidate will then sign a training agreement confirming the terms of the apprenticeship, and the ministry will also register your signed training agreement.
As the employer/sponsor, you are responsible for training an apprentice on the skills.
Employers with 499 or fewer paid employees can receive the financial support.

Having a Red Seal Endorsement is an accomplishment to be proud of, and it is the best credential a tradesperson can acquire. It provides an edge in the job market, and skilled tradespeople are in high demand, making it a rewarding career option that contributes to the growth of the nation's economy.
Participating in the Red Seals Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Program in Ontario and securing the Red Seal Endorsement immediately enhances the credibility of a tradesperson. It is the only credential that provides automatic acknowledgement of skills in any Canadian province or territory, without the need to pursue a series of multiple provincial certifications.
Furthermore, those who have earned the RSE enjoy higher wages and higher-calibre jobs, as it clearly signals to employers that they possess the skills for the job and are serious about their trade.
Participation in the Red Seal Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Service in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is an excellent way to attract talent in the increasingly in-demand skilled trades industry. With around 700,000 skilled Canadian tradespeople expected to retire by 2028, securing the next generation of skilled trade workers via the program is highly encouraged.
Access to existing databases enables employers to conveniently match the best Red Seal skilled trades candidates and apprentices to their business needs. This allows them to make informed decisions on whether to hire apprentices at the start of their career or seasoned professionals who are interested in being certified.
From a financial perspective, businesses can facilitate on-the-job training for apprentices who will rapidly become skilled at a far lower cost than fully-trained tradespeople. Additionally, some businesses may be eligible for grants and/or federal tax credits that are available when one or more apprentices are trained or hired.
Program Guidelines On-the-Job Training Duration Industry has identified the benchmark of 6280 hours as the duration necessary for any Apprentice to become competent in the skills required.
There may be circumstances in which the duration varies from this guideline. The In School Training Duration Industry has identified 720 hours of in-school training as the duration necessary for an Apprentice to complete the in-school curriculum for this program.
Program Requirements Voluntary Classification This program does not contain any compulsory skill sets.
The Apprentice must: • Achieve competency in all mandatory (unshaded) skills as identified in the Training Standard • Complete the in-school training as outlined in the industry and Ministry-approved Curriculum Standard, It is the responsibility of an Apprentice to maintain a training record.
